Choice Therapy & Reality Therapy
Choice Theory is actually an explanation of all human behavior developed by Dr. William Glasser.
Choice Theory pretty much rids us of the idea that people are “misbehaving.” All anyone is doing is their best attempt to get something they want. Of course, in the process, they may break laws, disregard rules and hurt others but those are really side effects of doing the best they know how to get their needs met. We are all doing our best—some of us simply have better tools, resources and behaviors at our disposal than others.
If we embrace Choice Theory’s concepts, then our function should be more to educate and help others self-evaluate the effectiveness of their own behavior. Know that often they will continue to do things exactly as they have because it’s familiar and/or because what they are doing really is getting them something they want. It is not our job to stop them, nor is it our job to rescue them from the consequences of their own behavior.

The training that is did this past week with Kim was world/ life changing. I have always heard and even tried to use choice theory in my classroom. However, it is hard to use it in your classroom when you really should just it for yourself and every aspect of your life. I will not only take this with me to my school but it every person so interact with to make me a better person and the person I want to be. I am the only person I can change so that is where I am starting, with myself.Diane G.
What Kim showed us in such a beautiful way is that experiencing Choice Theory in real life is not a “Theory,” it’s a “Reality.” That no matter who you are, no matter what your background is, and no matter what religion or status you have, as long as you don’t try to use your power to control others or try to change others, and instead you focus on yourself and what you can do differently or better to improve your relationship with others, you will be successful in improving your relationship with whomever you want to, no matter who that other person is.Shlomo Tauber
In honor of International Peace Month, I thought it appropriate to write about what constitutes peace. Internationally, most people think of peace as the absence of war. Nationally, it may look like bi-partisan solutions to issues with an active, participating...
Self-esteem isn’t something you can give another person; it’s something they need to cultivate for themselves. However, the environment you create around children can make that task easy or difficult and anything in between. If you are a parent, an educator, or any...
I do not mind at all sharing a comment about the training. I was and am very excited about choice theory. I feel that it would have helped my son a lot had it been available when he was in 9th grade. I really appreciated Kim’s stories. They were relatable to me because I too have a child with a lot of the qualities of the students I will be working with. They also drove a point home. She was very personal and opened up to us a lot and it was helpful to understand the different way we all perceive information. I learned a lot and plan on incorporating it into my classroom this year.P. Loving
The Basic Intensive Training is the single best training I have ever attended. It honestly altered the way I view the world in such a positive and meaningful way. I think I have a much more powerful lens now for understanding students, where they are coming from, and how to help them learn to meet their needs. And, for helping teachers understand students. On a personal level it changed who I want to be and how I want to interact with others. The safe and supportive atmosphere Kim created allowed each of us to reflect on everything she taught us and how we could integrate this within our work. It also created a community of Choice Theory practitioners who are tightly bound together and will stay in close contact to support each other as we share what we’ve learned throughout Albemarle County.Karen G. I really appreciate you and what you are doing for this world. It has truly inspired me. I started Choice Theory thinking that it is just another theory to learn. Instead it has put me on a journey to self discovery and more. It feels like a roller coaster ride and the past 4 days has shown me how to enjoy that ride. It would not have been possible without having gone through a great and empowering training with you.
Relationships are difficult and in those tough times , Kim’s insight and wisdom have helped me to become the parent, husband, and friend that I want to be. It is a blessing to have someone that provides you the balance you need to evolve. I now realize that it’s not about being who “they” want you to be but being the best YOU that you can be…Thanks Kim!
